 Today, Under the patronage of His Excellency Lazarus Chakwera -  the President of the Republic of Malawi - the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) inaugurated the launch  of the Phalombe Regional Hospital project in the Republic of Malawi. Established to support people and communities in need across the country, the project will contribute to ongoing efforts to raise local living standards and quality of life.


SFD contributed in the financing of the project through a 12 million USD soft loan, the project was inaugurated in the presence of H.E. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda — the Malawian Minister of Health and senior officials.
In celebration of the project’s launch, an opening ceremony was held in Phalombe and attended by a delegation of SFD representatives, led by Eng. Azzam Al-Barrak — the Fund’s Director of Eastern and Southern Africa Operations.
Offering greater access to crucial resources, all-important facilities and vital basic services, The hospital that we are launching today will serve residents in the rural areas of the Phalombe region — by addressing poverty, combatting diseases and reducing mortality rates among children. The Phalombe Regional Hospital Project builds on the impact of previous undertakings launched and supported by SFD over the years in different sectors in Malawi.


Spotlighting the importance of effective joint partnerships to overcoming persistent infrastructure challenges, Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, praised the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia — represented by SFD — for its contributions to Malawi’s growth and progress. She emphasized the important role Phalombe Regional Hospital will play in safeguarding the future of Malawi. The project, she stated, will help people to lead healthier, happier lives through the provision of high-quality care.

Since 2009, SFD has financed three projects in Malawi by providing three soft loans estimated at more than 36 million USD. These projects have contributed to the development of a range of vital industries and fields, including the water, health, energy, and transport sectors.
