BANJUL, The Gambia – 1 September 2026 – The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has signed an additional development loan agreement with the Government of The Gambia to complete the Greater Banjul Area Roads Project. With this agreement, SFD’s cumulative financing for the project reaches USD 60 million.
As part of the visit, H.E. Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, received H.E. Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, Chief Executive Officer of SFD. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed SFD-financed projects and programs in The Gambia and discussed opportunities to further strengthen development cooperation between SFD and the Government of The Gambia.
The additional development loan agreement was signed by H.E. Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad and H.E. Seedy Keita, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs of the Republic of The Gambia.
The additional financing will fund the remaining works needed to bring the road network to full operation. It covers upgrades to road components, improved stormwater drainage to protect roads and users during the rainy season, and enhanced traffic safety measures. Together, these works are designed to deliver safer, more durable roads that can accommodate growing traffic across the Greater Banjul Area.
Roads in the Greater Banjul Area serve the country’s most densely populated region and its main commercial corridors, making the project an important contributor to mobility, trade, and access to essential services for Gambian communities.
SFD’s partnership with The Gambia dates back to 1977. Since then, SFD has provided 15 development loans worth more than USD 181 million to finance 12 projects and programs across the transport, education, water, and economic development sectors. In addition, the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has allocated five grants to The Gambia through SFD, valued at more than USD 43 million, supporting the energy, water, and sanitation sectors.
