Riyadh, January 15, 2025,

CEO of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad signed a memorandum of understanding today with Minister of Finance of Somalia Bihi Egeh, providing a $2 million grant from the Kingdom through the SFD. The grant is part of the fifth phase of the Saudi Well Drilling and Rural Development Program in Africa. The signing ceremony was attended by Saudi Ambassador to Somalia Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Mawlid.
The memorandum aims to improve access to clean water in rural areas of Somalia by drilling wells and establishing water supply networks powered by solar energy. This initiative seeks to enhance water and food security, provide safe drinking water, combat water scarcity, and reduce reliance on contaminated water sources in Somalia.

The Saudi Well Drilling and Rural Development Program in Africa is a cornerstone of the Kingdom's development contributions through the SFD to support developing countries. Since its launch in 1982, the program has addressed the needs of African nations by funding the construction of more than 10,000 potable water facilities in 20 countries across the continent. Valued at approximately $330 million, these projects have provided clean drinking water to over 5 million people, mitigating the impact of drought in rural areas.

This memorandum underscores the SFD’s commitment to aiding developing nations in overcoming challenges to their progress and achieving development goals. It also highlights the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
